Valmet: Calibration button tester

We delivered a quality assurance development project for Valmet Automation, replacing obsolete test equipment with a new solution. Based on the customer’s clearly defined requirements, we designed and built the test equipment as a fixed-price delivery.

Objectives

We designed and built a device that moves in a two-dimensional plane and carries Valmet’s measuring instrument. The delivery also included software with a graphical user interface for controlling the device, receiving measurement results and displaying them graphically. We designed the electronics and mechanics in-house. The frame was manufactured from thick aluminium plate using our own CNC machine. The electronics enable the stepper motors to be controlled from a computer via USB.

The project was completed successfully. We delivered the device on schedule, the customer is satisfied with it, and it improves the quality assurance of their product. There were challenges along the way, but overall the project was a success. Ultimately, a satisfied customer is what matters most.

Technical implementation

The application was developed in C++ for Windows using Qt 6.5.3 and the MinGW compiler. In the user interface, the user can define the boundaries of the test area and the distance between measurement points. A 3D visualisation of the measurements is drawn on screen in real time, and the results can be saved to a CSV file after the test.
